Battle over New Ghegmok is a historical document.

Summary[ | ]

Battle over New Ghegmok describes a historical event in the history of the Stealos Empire.

Prelude to War[ | ]

14:00 hours New Ghegmok time, 5 days since message interception. NGSN and Shadow Guard forces reporting in above New Ghegmok, defensive line established. Emperor Rano Alexandrius, Fleetmaster Xeno and Shadowmaster Ragnor are in command of available forces from onboard the emperor’s command ship.

Rano, Ragnor and Xeno watched out the window of the bridge as ships flew past in all different directions, scrambling to get into formation. All available forces had just been scrambled in the last few minutes with what little ships could make it in time now lining up to defend New Ghegmok against an overwhelming force of unknown size and power. Other soldiers would have turned tail and run, but not the brave men and women of the New Ghegmok Star Navy. Their loyalty to their emperor was a true testament to the strength of the NGSN.

A small and stout Vykeen stumbled his way onto the bridge holding a file in his hand, trembling as he went, he approached the three leaders gathered around a system map in the CIC. “Excuse me sirs, my lord, I uh have a uhh report for you uhhh regarding our tactical status” he sputtered. “At ease soldier” the Emperor said coolly, “What is your name?” The young Vy'keen saluted before taking a deep breath and stating his rank and name. “Recruit Tavaq Zelop standing proud and ready to serve!” he bumbled. “Let’s have that report then recruit” Xeno broke in. Tavaq handed the data pad to Xeno who scoffed before passing it onto Ragnor who simply rolled his eyes before dumping it in Rano’s froggy hands. Rano did not act like his advisors, instead carefully reading the information he had been presented with. Rano looked up, flashed a slight grin before chuckling to himself. “Is this what is turning your wellies brown recruit?” He stood up and walked towards the shaking Vykeen in front of him. “This is your first placement, huh?” he croaked, but before Tavaq had a chance to answer Rano continued; “out of the academy and into the fire” he chuckled as he turned to Xeno as he shook his head. He put a hand on the Vykeen's shoulder and looked him in the eyes. “We may be outnumbered in terms of ships, but not firepower and spirit, for that we have much. Together we stand united in defence of our Empire! Today we will hold the line and ensure the survival of our great Empire as we have done many times before. This is what you’ve trained for.” He salutes the recruit as many voices saying “Long live the empire!” resound through the loudspeakers which had been broadcasting Rano’s message across the fleet. Tavaq saluted and scurried away. Godspeed gentlemen, ready your attack wings and watch your backs, I want to see the both of you on the other side of this.

The Attack[ | ]

Bright flashes of light lit up the system as Rano carefully maneuvered out of the hanger bay; the enemy fleet had arrived. Rano flew ahead of the defensive line and positioned his ship far out in front of his own forces and directly in front of what seemed to be the lead enemy attack vessel, evidently their command ship. It was a massive sphere with wings sprouting out of the top, bottom, left and right side of the main sphere, all armed to teeth with almost every kind of armament you can think of; cannons, missile launchers and lasers you name it every square inch was utilized by some sort of weapon. Rano hailed the ship and to his surprise almost instantly got through to the behemoth ship. Attackers usually never talk; what angle are these guys playing? Rano wondered. “Attention unknown vessel, you are trespassing in our space and have committed acts of aggression that could be perceived as acts of war against our Empire. We intercepted your message that you transmitted to one of our relays, 412 I believe, but it was unclear. I will only ask you once to turn your ship around and leave and only if you cooperate can we communicate further…”

Rano was suddenly interrupted by a deep, booming voice being broadcast to all ships in the immediate vicinity. “I am Zeknak, trade lord of the Stealos Confederation. We do not want to be your friend; we will not be turning around. We are your end, your conquerors. We are the Stealos confederation.”  The transmission abruptly stopped, and the enemy fleet charged it’s weapons. Rano yanked the control stick and did a sharp 180, flying in a zig zag evasive pattern to avoid the hail of fire that was being directed at him.“ Rano slammed a big red button on the right side of his console which was all it took to send a signal to the waiting fleet master.

There was a loud crackle on the radio as Xeno broadcast a message to the whole fleet; “Incoming ships! All ships stand ready. Counting multiple fighters, frigates and cruisers. Here they come, let none through our defensive line!”

The Battle Begins[ | ]

The two forces hurtled towards each other firing barrages of weapons fire as they entered weapons range. Rano, who was now in the middle of the crossfire. He sharply pulled up taking a hit and singeing his engine in the process. He climbed as high as he could with a whole squadron of fighters on his tail before briefly cutting his engines, using emergency thrusters to turn himself so that he was facing the oncoming ships, charged his positron ejectors and rained hell on the approaching fighter as he charged into the fireball where several fighters used to be.

The combined SGI forces were already outnumbered, having only part of the usual defence fleet, reserve fleets and any close by reinforcements that could make it in time. This didn’t play into SGI’s favour as ship after ship, loss after loss the SGI forces became fewer in number until there were only a few left. One cruiser made it through the remaining forces and made a beeline straight for New Ghegmok. It made it to New Ghegmok’s upper atmosphere before getting destroyed by ground defences and the valiant sacrifice of the SGI Dukensaw frigate which after sustaining heavy damage flew on a collision course with the attacking vessel causing a shock wave that destroyed much of New Ghegmok.

Rano could only look on from his battered cockpit as he saw the shockwave ripple across the planet's surface. Devastated Rano turned to face the Stealos confederation fleet which had sustained heavy losses as well and was being held back by the remainder of SGI forces. “All remaining shadow wings on me. All other ships that can hear this give us a clear shot at their command ship.” Rano, Ragnor and the remaining shadow wings of the Shadow guard darted around weapon fire, forming an arrow formation of ships that speeded towards the enemy command ship. As the fighter formation got closer more and more ships were picked off. Rano closed his eyes and took a deep breath, “so much loss… I hope somebody out there thinks this was worth it.”

Suddenly, just as before when the Stealos confederation ships warped in, the system was lit up by bright flashes of light. SGI reinforcements? Not this time. Multiple ships had just warped in but none of them had SGI or Stealos confederation ID’s. “Great, just what we need, more unknown ships here to clean up and scavenge no doubt.” But to Rano’s surprise the new ships started attacking the fragmented Stealos confederation forces. A problem for later Rano thought as for now he had to take this command ship out. “All remaining ships in formation, scan for weak points connected to their hanger bay. We’re boarding that ship…”

Taking the Flagship[ | ]

Upon finding a structural weak point in the ships outer hull that had been damaged during the fighting, all ships loaded high yield warheads and fired in the few seconds before they entered the would be blast radius. They slowed to manoeuvring thrusters and entered through the fireball that erupted from the ship. Only three ships made it into the now decompressed hangar bay: Ragnor, Rano and one other Shadow of Rano. All three dawned their combat suits and stormed the ship, hacking the ship systems to open the other hangar bays so NGSN commandos alongside Xeno could board the ship through a proper entrance.

Rano ran ahead of his team, killing anyone who got in his way to the bridge. He blew the doors killing the last two guards on the bridge, which had all but been destroyed during the fighting. Before trade lord Zeknak could even turn around Rano has his rifle trained on his head. “You’ve killed many this day, both of your own people and mine. You do not deserve a quick death but… Never mind” he croaked and fired a blaze javelin beam, causing Zeknak’s head to disintegrate on impact. The remaining bridge crew looked on helplessly as Rano marched to the main panel on the bridge. He scanned the available buttons in front of him and found exactly what he was looking for. “Broadcasting to all ships in the region, all SGI colonies and installations and everything that used to belong to the Stealos Confederation. I am Emperor Rano Alexandrius, as you can see by the pile of ash behind me I have killed your leader. Surrender to me and I shall be merciful, continue to fight and you will know and slow and painful end.”

The battle is won, but at what cost? This story is continued in the story:

The rise and fall of the Stealos Empire
