A Jettison cargo pod box

Cargo Drop boxes are items that can be found on planets in No Man's Sky.

Summary[ | ]

There are six types of drop boxes that can be found in No Man's Sky. Colors and sizes differ, making them easy to identify. They can literally be found everywhere on a planet except for caves and underwater. It's easiest to find them by looking for a Waypoints, as cargo boxes will always spawn nearby, and in bigger groups.

Damaged Container[ | ]

Cargobox2

Damaged Container

This box, once opened, will pop up a GUI with an option to either dismantle or transfer to your inventory 50-100 units of Rusted Metal. It will then open the box and may give you a commodity item, such as a Gek Relic or Korvax Convergence Cube.

Effective in trade and also some are required to get a Portal location from a Monolith.

Jettison Pod[ | ]

This cargo box is round, and yellow. Once opened it will give you a Power Canister.

Effective for refueling multi-tool equipment.

Cargo Drop[ | ]

Isotope[ | ]

This cargo box is the smallest and can come in two colors: red is more common, while yellow is rare. Even though it is called Isotope, once opened it will always give you up to 50 Plutonium.

Effective for multi-tool equipment and Launch Thrusters.

Cargobox3

The "Search" Box

This cargo box is tubular, tall, and a dark shade of red. It requires an AtlasPass v1 to open. It is probably the most useful as it contains ingredients for a Warp Cell, and sometimes even a Warp Cell itself.

Can contain Suspension Fluid, Electron Vapour, Antimatter, or a Warp Cell (rare).

Health Restorative[ | ]

This cargo box is square, and white. Once opened it will raise your health levels.

Damaged Container Items[ | ]

Damaged Containers can contain one of the following items: (+ up to 100 Rusted Metal)

Additional information[ | ]

  • The green cargo box has been renamed Damaged Container in the Atlas Rises update, and you can now obtain Rusted Metal upon opening it.
  • It is possible to destroy these boxes with your Plasma Launcher.
  • Can spawn in cave openings, but not in caves themselves or underwater.
