Starting on the 1st of June 2017, cassette tapes (and merchandising) were mailed to prominent individuals in the No Man's Sky (Reddit) online community. They contained music and hidden in a spectograph the word "portal".

The 9th casette, received by youtuber Cobra, connects the cassettes with the Waking Titan ARG. The timing matched with a date given there, and the cassette box contains a logo from the atlas corporation that is a part of that arg. The B.Side of that casette also contains the word "JOURNEY" which is a solution for a wakingtitan puzzle.

The full story of the Waking Titan Arg can be read on the Gamedetectives Wiki page for Waking Titan.

Spectograph

B-side spectograph of tape 7/16

The B-side audio of all of the currently available tapes consists of garbled noise. When running the noise through a spectrogram, a sequence of characters can be clearly seen.

706s7274616p

Running this ciphertext through ROT13 and then decoding the resulting hex yields the following string:

portal

Notes/Posters[ | ]

Some tapes came with a signed NMS Poster with the text

Thank you for your support
It means the universe to us
we hope you enjoy what comes next
-Sean

One came with a note:

The giant gateway calls out to me, filling my mind with whispered secrets of a far-flung world.

This is an exact quote of a text that is in the game files right now, but apparently not used or discovered yet.
