The Galaxy Centre is the largely empty area in the middle of each galaxy. Travelling through the Galaxy Centre is one of four ways to reach another galaxy.

Summary[ | ]

The Galaxy Centre is the epicenter of each galaxy in No Man's Sky. It is the only direct gateway to the next galaxy in numerical order, and the only way of permanent galaxy travel apart from restarting the Atlas' simulation at the end of the main storyline.

This area of the galaxy is completely empty and spans a sphere with a radius of roughly 2,800-3,000 LY. It consist of 7 axial voxels (regions) and 4-5 diagonal voxels. The nearest star systems may be reached via multiple starship warps or via Portal, to which reaching any star system within 5,000 LY necessitates having at least 6 Glyphs.

There is nothing aside of the galaxy's core here and unlike The Fade, all star systems near the Galaxy Centre can be visited.

The British spelling of this phrase is used in the wiki.

Travelling to other galaxies[ | ]

There are four known methods to traverse to another galaxy, three of which are permanent:

  1. The first method follows the New Beginnings questline to its end, where the player can choose to end the current galaxy's existence to create a new galaxy of their choice. The chosen galaxy already exists, this is only a story device that offers a reliable way to skip galaxies on the way deeper down.
  2. The next permanent option is to travel via hyperdrive and black holes to the centre.
  3. The last permanent option is to use the warp portal on the space anomaly to warp into another player's last edited base in a new galaxy.
  4. The semi-permanent option, which is prone to bugs and problems, is to play with a friend in another galaxy. Due to incompatibility problems with the station teleport system, this is discouraged.

If the player follows the Galactic Centre objective on the Galactic Map to its destination, opening the Galaxy Map in that final system and selecting the objective while the starship's Hyperdrive is fully charged will allow the player to warp to the centre and immediately transfer to the next galaxy (triggering Take a Deep Breath or To Live Forever achievements if on Survival or Permadeath Game modes).

It requires moving the mouse (on a PC) around until "Select" circle appears, then pressing and holding the left button until the core is selected. See this Reddit post on how to do the core selection. On console systems, this is accomplished by holding the right thumbstick in the direction of the center for several seconds.

Several galaxies require specific coloured drives to transition to the next galaxy.

A player may rapidly traverse through multiple consecutive galaxies through the following steps:

  1. Find and activate a Portal in any system (using either a Planetary Chart or an Exocraft's Signal Booster)
  2. Use the Glyph set to teleport to a star system near the galactic centre (100104005005100104005005 is a generic address that gives very close proximity; alternatively players may consult the list of Gateways systems referenced on each galaxy page.
  3. Warp to the new galaxy's galactic centre and repeat the entire process again.

Possible Bug[ | ]

When playing on any of the Game modes with a storyline, completing New Beginnings and choosing to go to a new galaxy, appears to render any non-explored galaxies to be unreachable via warp after that point.

Cautions for galactic transfer[ | ]

Cautions should be made, however, as entering a new galaxy causes these things to happen:

  • Player will land on a new planet in the new galaxy. However, players may freely travel to previously constructed bases in any galaxy. Be aware that after reaching the allotted base limit (449), no new bases will appear in the teleporter destination list until at least one previous Base Computer is deleted. Base computer(s) constructed after reaching the limit must be interacted with again after the removal of a previous base in order to appear in the teleporter destination list.
  • All tech upgrades installed in the player's exosuit will be broken and need repair. Basic technologies are unaffected.
  • All modules and upgrades in the active multi-tool, will be broken and need repair.
  • Player's active ship will have all modules and upgrades broken and need repair.

Easing the transfer[ | ]

Some preparations that may ease the travel:

  • Scrap existing bases for materials, if there is a shortage.
  • Consider setting up a Freighter base if one does not already exist.
  • Archive all non-vital technology for your Starship, Multi-Tool, and Exosuit in your inventory. This way, you can re-install them after the jump without having to repair them.
  • Complete objectives for missions such as Base Computer Archives which must be completed at a specific location - objectives of this type will become impossible to complete after a galaxy transfer.
  • Have some common materials (such as Carbon, Oxygen, Sodium, and Ferrite Dust) in inventory, to make initial repair to Multi-Tool Scanner, ship Launch Thruster, and Pulse Engine.
  • Full repair of the Exosuit and the multi-tool requires significant number of Wiring Looms (up to 20-30 depending on the existing inventories), 4-5 Carbon Nanotubes, and some module-specific resources (e.g. Magnetised Ferrite for Scatter Blaster repairs.
  • Use a spare multi-tool right before making the choice to jump to a new galaxy to avoid having to repair modules on the player's main multi-tool.
  • Use a spare ship right before making the choice to jump to a new galaxy, to avoid having to repair modules on the player's main ship. If a player jumps to the next galaxy using Freighter, this spare ship does not need to be repaired at all.

Controversy[ | ]

The Galaxy Centre was the main goal set forth by the developers of No Man's Sky and marked the final step for any Traveller attempting to reach the next galaxy.

The basic concept of repeating the player's journey over and over led to frustration and outrage among the player base as its reveal was advertised as a major selling point. Even the most enduring explorers became frustrated since there was no centre of the universe to discover at the end of further galaxy jumps either.

Initially the 256th galaxy repeated itself with a changing colour palette if it was ever reached at all. Later on the universe of No Man's Sky comprised only 255 unique galaxies that loop back to Euclid at the end of the journey.

The intention of Hello Games with each major update is to add new features and expand the gameplay experience further. These changes shift the focus slowly from galaxy jumps to staying in one place, building bases and creating communities.

"These changes are an answer to how we have seen people playing since the release of NEXT, and is something we’ve dreamed of for a long time." [1]

Glitched Galactic Center Stars[ | ]

Each galaxy is believed to have a glitched Phantom star at Galactic Coordinates 07FE:007E:07FE:0FFF. These are accessible readily only to PC players that use a save file editor or similar tools (see No Man's Connect under Third Party Tools - Navigation).

For non-PC players, they can initially access these systems only by joined the game of another player that already have access to this system. Once they lock the star system into their history by boarding the Space station in the system then they can access it through either a Base Teleport Module or a Space Station Terminus Teleporter. Some players build bases in these system to enable permanent ready access to them.

In a glitched galactic center star, it is not possible to use the Galactic Map to warp to other stars. The system can be only be departed using the space station or base teleporter.

Documented examples of these systems are listed in Galaxy Centre - Glitched Stars.

Trivia[ | ]

It is likely that the Galaxy Centre consists of an enormous black hole, as all other black holes lead to it. Based on scientific models, the massive pull of a black hole is one of the requirements to keep a galaxy together even though it lacks the mass to do it (See: Dark Matter). Since black holes allow to travel incredible distances, this might explains how the Centre leads to another galaxy. See: Supermassive Black Hole
