Lateralus Prime is a planet.

Summary[edit | edit source]

Lateralus Prime is a planet in the HUB10-G-1D2 Lateralus system.

In Survival/Permadeath mode Lateralus Prime is a lush world of towering mountains and deep, narrow valleys, dense forests of green- and blue-leaved deciduous trees dominated by its reptilian ungulate megafauna, and grassy orange meadows where roam a peculiar species of pygmy sauropods. Shallow rivers full of longnose tiger trout wind through the valleys, often emptying into narrow lochs and shallow basin lakes.

Its extensive system of ruins, monoliths and defunct portals suggest a long history of sapient habitation, but modern Gek colonial bases are few and far between.

Atmosphere and climate[edit | edit source]

The planet has a dense, humid atmosphere characterized by blue skies, near-constant drizzle and frequent tropical storms of icy rain. Lateralus Prime's lush ecology belies its bitterly cold climate; even in clear conditions visitors are encouraged to dress warmly or risk hypothermia. Advanced thermic protection is a necessity at night and especially in rainy weather, during which travel should be limited to brief jaunts.

Waypoints[edit | edit source]

Notable locations[edit | edit source]

Mons Lateralus The tallest discovered mountain on Lateralus Prime, and perhaps among the tallest ever photographed in the No Man's Sky universe. A Communications Station marks its summit. Nms 20170318221707.jpg
Hollow Bluff Outpost A trading post atop a lonely bluff riddled with cave systems, set in the center of a rare lowland of golden meadows and shallow ponds. Nms 20170318224339.jpg

Life[edit | edit source]

Fauna[edit | edit source]

Lateralus Prime's fauna is characterized by strong sexual dimorphism across all terrestrial species, often to the extent that different genders may be assumed to be completely separate species without a detailed zoological analysis.

Due to the apparently functional nature of differential morphological features (as opposed to merely cosmetic), one may speculate that deeply specialized complimentary gender roles were necessary in order to ensure a species' survival in the planet's hostile climate. For example, perhaps the Pygmy Sailcrest exhibits divergent foraging habits between genders, with the umbrella-like crests of the prime gender permitting terrestrial grazing during heavy rain, while the fin-like crests of the non-uniform gender assist in underwater grazing under the same conditions. In this way each gender obtains shelter from the storm while effectively doubling the grazing area for a herd.

The staggering extent of Lateralus Prime's rich ecology in spite of hostile conditions suggests these kinds of gender-divergent adaptations have been a successful strategy.
