Should the crafting section be automated?[edit source]

Writing out the crafting recipes per page for each page of each ingredient seems like an exponentially tedious task. Should the source and crafting sections auto-update? If so, I'd gladly program the bot, but I don't know which bot framework this wiki intends to use. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Sploadie (talkcontribs) at 17:37, 12 August 2016 (UTC). Do you mean the list of resources needed to craft an item or the list that shows what items can be crafted with the resource? The former now uses the {{Craft}} template. The latter I'm still working on with SMW. --Alianin T •  C 19:26, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
I think they mean both, but extracted from game data, which is up the devs I suppose, since you'd need to reverse engineer game files in order to obtain that information --TheNinth (talk) 20:24, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

Screenshots[edit source]

I think we should create a page where users upload their screenshots of the exact position on the planet you spawn in at. That way videos can be created and people could just look at all the different worlds people are spawned in. We could have a dedicated place just under the description and news of No Man's Sky. Possibly have it "update" with the most recent pictures uploaded as the info under the page name/link. Message me what you think.ElectricNode (talk) 02:07, 9 March 2015 (UTC)ElectricNode

Thanks for the great idea! I have gone and created a page exactly for this! If there's anything else you'd like to see, please let us know! --Textermer T •  C 19:26, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

Inappropriate Edits[edit source]

Is there way to disabled not login users attempt to randomly edit this wiki and all the hardworks everyone has been putting in. Screw them haters they can all go to hell.--Wei2Awesome (talk) 17:18, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

In brief, no. If we eliminated anon users from consideration, half of our updates would probably not be made. As admins, we try and keep tabs on vandalism and spammish commentary and remove as necessary. If you have specific instances, just indicate them here in this forum. Proposal for noramlizing upgrade pages[edit source]

I'm just starting with small sections at a time, and it just happens to be upgrades. Specifically, the Mining Beam Upgrade page. I have created an example of something pretty close (it's not perfect yet) to what I believe would be better for the wiki. It has easier readability, more concrete facts rather than "currently researching" information, and more flow. I put the more important facts that people would generally check the page for near the top, such as crafting and repair, the stats near the middle, and the rest of the information near the bottom. There's more use of small pictures on the page that help it pop more. I wanted to put this idea here, before I go and change every single "Upgrade" page to uniformly match this. I will provide minimums and maximums of each upgrade in a picture as proof and add them to the discovered upgrades at the bottom with a screenshot link. That way, there can be an easy way for new information to be read and disputed as the truth without revert/edit wars.

Side note: Some of the page is nowiki, as I do not want to add that page to categories. Halogod35 (talk) 22:31, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

First one is obvious, which Ddfairchild will point out too, that using colors on the wiki is generally avoidable. Indicating dangers with red color for planets, like frenzied Sentinels or extreme weather, is acceptable.
For tables usually we don't set the width (as Ddfairchild will tell you as well), we let the wiki handle it (of course sometimes I set it myself). For the prefix and suffix table, I would make into one table as per the following coding and let the width to be automatic:
! colspan="4" |Suffixes
! ! colspan="4" |All Classes
| colspan="2" width=50% |
*Beam Amplifier
In the Discovered Upgrades section the tables should have a center alignment for the values and class icon, but the header should remain on the left side. Also for the longest suffix or prefix with two words I would use the non-breaking space, so it remains in one line.
{| class="mw-collapsible mw-collapsed" style="text-align:center; width:700px;"
| style="text-align:left;" | '''S-Class Mining Beam Upgrades'''
{| class="wikitable sortable" style="width:100%;"
! Class!!Prefix!!Suffix!!Mining Speed!!Heat Dispersion!!Fuel Efficiency!!Reload Time!!Screenshot
| [[File:CLASS.S.png|30px]]||Dazzling||Photon Mirror||20||50||21||20||-
These changes reflect only my opinion and most of them would make it more aesthetically pleasing as I see it. Gorla (talk) 23:33, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
The color thing, I can completely understand. The more I was tweaking with it to make it blend in better, the more I realized, there's no way to have a color representation without it being too painfully obvious. Then I realized, even if I made the text colored, then people with white backgrounds or something won't be able to see it very well. So I'll try to take those out, but I still do like the ability to open up different sections at a time. If I'm looking for S, I don't care about C.
I definitely will make some more changes along with your general guidelines and suggestions as you presented.
The only other issue I've come across is that S A B C class upgrades sections is actually quite a lengthy scroll for those who don't care. Do you think it's fine or should it be compressed further, somehow? Halogod35 (talk) 23:55, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
I remember now that color-blinded people may have an issue with certain colors, so that is why it should be avoided. Regarding the Discovered Upgrades section, the four different tables should remain.
For the Upgrade properties section what about a table found in Boltcaster Upgrade, but extended with minimum values and the each icon could be placed next to its name in the header, like UPGRADECAT.SPEED.png Mining Speed? Or just the icon, with a coding before it, see what I did on Frigate Traits. Gorla (talk) 00:17, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
Ah, good point. My thoughts were something along with themes. Like if I change mine to monobook.js or something, white text won't be invisible. Either way, both points strong. You are right.
Funny. I looked at that and thought, okay I gotta steal that. Then I forgot to. So I've made the changes to the page. I like it, but I'm afraid people aren't going to have a clear understanding that the bonuses are randomly picked. Like 2-3 for B-Class. That's what I did like about the separate sections was being able to have text that told you "Randomly picks these attributes."
I LOVE the compression it has done, but I also feel like there should be text around it explaining stuff. I mean feel free to edit the sandbox. It's for all of us. Halogod35 (talk) 01:26, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
From my point of view it looks ready, but I would wait a bit and see if anyone has some other ideas (or concerns). Gorla (talk) 02:22, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
I've made a couple of more changes. For some reason, I kept finding myself looking up and down the table vertically for stats rather than horizontally. So I switched the orientation. It seems to make no difference in readability, as both ways keep messing with my head. But then I noticed, without the borders and the floating text, I feel like it seems to work. Halogod35 (talk) 23:08, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
I found it a bit odd without any border, so I added an outer one. Also I made some changes, mostly using the class icons and hopefully without overdoing it. Gorla (talk) 00:39, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Class A File is protected.[edit source]

The File:CLASS.A.png is protected because of inclusion, but the Class B, C, and S are not. I just simply need the [[Category:Class icons]] added to CLASS.A.PNG, or the odd protection resolved. Halogod35 (talk) 16:29, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

Sorry, I set the protection unintentionally to cascading on the Template:Technology infobox NEXT, therefore it protected the class A image as well. I changed it, so the image can be edited now. Gorla (talk) 16:38, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. You should probably protect the Module:Crafting list as well. Halogod35 (talk) 17:47, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

A message to every editor on the wiki[edit source]

Putting this here for visibility, I'd like every editor reading this text right now to give their opinion on the issue outlined at Talk:Discoveries

Text in Popups isn't readable in dark theme[edit source]

I hope this is the right place for bringing this up. In the default Hydra Dark theme, some text information in Pop Ups can't be read. Most noticeable for me when uploading pictures.

Update the front page[edit source]

29 March 2017

  • The main page has a nice look to it, but it doesn't mention a lot of major gameplay features that have been added since release. Things like Freighters, base building, and exocraft should all have direct links from the front page. If I could edit it I would do so myself. --Nodiddlyoddly (talk) 19:12, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

Global AF-Disallow filter[edit source]

  • While trying to create a page, I'm tripping over the "Global AF-Disallow certain words" filter. Thing is, I can't in any way figure out what word in my page would be causing the issue. --BotFodder (talk)
    • My initial recommendation would be to add one paragraph at a time until you find the paragraph that fails the filter. Then add that paragraph sentence by sentence, then word by word etc. Let me know if this helps you narrow it down. Ddfairchild (talk) 22:44, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
      • Okay I don't know why it's working now but it is. The next issue I'm having is that attempts to upload pictures bug out. Still trying to figure out if I'm being stupid and missing something or if I'm tripping over something else. --BotFodder (talk)
        • What's the actual error messaging you are receiving? At what point in the upload process are you having the issue? Ddfairchild (talk) 16:02, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

Hub[edit source]

So can there only be 4 Hubs? 1 per quadrant. Doesn't seem like a very good system. My alliance has 100+ members and we dont know what quadrant we are in. This means we must relocate everything to the delta quadrant. Also i would like to put forward the Knights of the Anomaly to the delta quadrant hub

Not much information about Ocean habitats for various biomes.[edit source]

While the main "Biome" page has been updated with latest information from the Visions update, the other pages for core biome types (lush, frozen, hot, etc) haven't been touched since NEXT.

I want to add general information about set pieces, resources, and more that now appear in oceans on these planets (e.g.). Would it be more appropriate to append the ocean info to the core Biomes page, or to each biome's page with a marker that the information comes from the Abyss? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Imaginamagica (talkcontribs) at 05:11, 2 June 2019 (UTC). As far as I know the core biomes did not change since NEXT, only the Exotic biome was extended further in the Visions update.
I think the best to add an Underwater section to the Biome page and it definitely will get the attention of others that might have more insight into this subject. As I remember underwater biomes (if there are multiple ones, although the official update speaks about them in plural form) are independent from the land biomes. I will keep any eye out for this when checking the game files. Gorla (talk) 16:13, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

Other Translations[edit source]

German translation[edit source]

Hey there, I just wanted to ask if it's possible to start a German translation of the Wiki? marclu00 (talk) 06:57, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Yes, we can do a German translation. We just ask you go ahead and translate the main page using the translation guidelines and a couple other pages and we can get it spun up. Let me know if you have any questions! --Alianin T •  C 12:51, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
If you need any help translating correctly or someone to proof read your translations you can contact me through my talk page. --TakaNoYaiba (talk) 16:41, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
The wiki is up and the translations are moved over. Let me know if you need anything! --Alianin T •  C 21:13, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

Traditional Chinese translation[edit source]

Hi, I am wondering if we can do Trad. Chinese translation for NMS wiki? I can do the translations since I do this for living (and simplified too if needed). Also what does it takes to become an admin for wiki? Wanted to be NMS wiki admin :) Love this game so much! Twitter from Murrey about adding add lang support for NMS > --Wei2Awesome (talk) 23:48, 18 August 2016 (UTC)Wei2Awesome

Yes, we can do a Chinese translation. We just ask you go ahead and translate the main page using the translation guidelines and a couple other pages and we can get it spun up. Which version of Chinese? There's a few different ones we can use. Let me know if you have any questions! --Alianin T •  C 19:26, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
Ok i think I figured out what to do, give me one second creates some crucial pages with mark with zh-TW. Thanks--Wei2Awesome (talk) 21:26, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
Copying my responses over from my talk page.
Hello! Yes, your example is correct. For the main page use "No Man's Sky Wiki/zh-tw" and then put in your translation of the page there. We only need the main page and a couple others, just to show there's interest and we can get things moving! --Alianin T •  C 17:33, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
Are you sure about zh-tw? That's Chinese (Taiwan). There's these options: zh - Chinese, zh-hans - Chinese (simplified), zh-hant - Chinese (traditional), zh-tw - Chinese (Taiwan), and a bunch of others, but those are the popular ones. I just want to make sure we spin up the correct language. --Alianin T •  C 17:44, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
Ok, the lang code page doesn't show any of those when i open it only shows zh .... welp..I think Ill have to redo them. Now I'm going create pages with "/zh-hant" with Category: zh-hant translation at the bottom of each page! Sorry about the miscreations under zh-TW, please delete them with /zh-TW.--Wei2Awesome (talk) 21:43, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
I see you're creating the pages, great! That's the first step. The next step is to actually translate the content of those pages into Chinese. --Alianin T •  C 22:05, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

That's the confusing part, do I translate them or admin like you going auto-translate with program and I edit them if there's errors? I can totally translate them (in fact all the pages) except I need clarification on who's going to translate. Also do I keep create more pages with /zh-hant marker (once translation is complete on the one that's marked) or I can just create page in zh-hant for pages that's not yet associate with zh-hant sub? Thx!--Wei2Awesome (talk) 22:45, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

  • It'd be you translating, we generally tend to shy away from autotranslating and defer to people who are more familiar with the language. - Wagnike2 (talk) 19:00, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
There is no autotranslation, unless you count copying the text into Google Translate. :D You or someone else will need to manually translate the pages. --Alianin T •  C 19:10, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
Got it, I will translate them and put them on the page I created such as No Man Sky Wiki/zh-hant accordingly ? Then you guys will make them into sub-domain and delete these temp pages? correct? :D --Wei2Awesome (talk) 19:29, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
Correct! --Alianin T •  C 20:34, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

Translation to Brazilian Portuguese[edit source]

Hi, i'm brazilian and our NMS wiki it's actually pretty sad. There are just 691 pages and 235 articles and no one edit anything for months. With the multiplayer there a lot of new brazilian players and most people don't speak english here, so i was wondering if we can translate the English NMS wiki.

I saw here in your page a German and a Chinese guy asking to do a translation, but how does that work? The translate pages will be in the old brazilian wiki or I have to create a new one?

--Verticalringsofuranus (talk) 23:42, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your question about the Brazilian translation. Sorry to say, but there is no automatic page translation built in to a wiki.
However, if you want to take current English pages and do the translation into Portuguese, that would be greatly appreciated. Ddfairchild (talk) 16:41, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
