Hey, just a small note on creature data because of my small age/genus edit (just want to provide some more information of what I know):

Most genera have two genders. These genders often look different from another. Every gender has a fixed height and weight. So you get two height and two weight values per species. An example can be seen at Y. Marrowirmeum.

I'm not entirely sure how creature age works, but it's definitely not bound to any other value AFAIK, and can change per creature. Therefore it is just not a good datapoint for me to have, since you might observe something different than I do. But weight and height will be identical for both of us when looking at the same gender.

You are of course welcome to still record the age if you wish, I just wanted to explain my own viewpoint here :)

Request if you would? The following moons all are using the Planet infobox as we didn't have a moon infobox back when they were created. Could you revisit these pages and change the infobox tag? Also, anywhere on the page where it uses the phrase "planet" in regards to the moon, change that phrase to "moon."

Thanks!

Hey, I'm the wiki manager for this wiki and wanted to thank you for all your contributions. Fandom is interested in rewarding editors like you with a game (from Steam, etc) or related merchandise, so I'm curious if there's anything you'd be interested in receiving. Let me know.

Avatar for The zed0

Wow! Thanks. Just enjoying mapping the galaxy one planet at a time. I've started to get into Stellaris again so I would love the Distant Stars or or Megacorp expansion for it. I'll shoot you a reddit pm.

Created a shortcut macro for you called ZEDmap. You can see an example on ZED-23 I in the Notable locations sections.

Less typing, and if you ever end up having to change your URL structure later, you can just change the macro and it'll update any page that's using it.

Thanks!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

So how do you like the new CARGO macro for regions that auto-loads the star systems?

Avatar for The zed0

I like it. Looks good. My only concern would be with regions with a lot of systems discovered. Does the page get super long or does the table go to 2 columns? Do we have a CARGO for listing planets in a system?

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

We have had very very few regions so far that have a lot of systems marked. And for those, I've just left them as hard-coded.

As for planets in a system? No, don't have one of those. Sad to say, the number of editors who enter planet pages has gotten fewer and fewer; especially those who enter a page for all of them.

Then we have the question about what to display. Your tables are nice and concise, but they include a graphic which I don't believe CARGO tables store very well. And for resources, the way editors enter THOSE is widespread <g> So knowing exactly how to display them would be a bit sketchy.

Been looking at some of your contributions. Quite good, thanks for your participation.

After some lenghty discussion with our admins and Gamepedia, we decided to make the switch from how we have been doing categories to what is the accepted/expected way of doing them. We are doing this mainly with moons/planets/stars/regions/galaxies, but will gradually try to switch other types of pages over. For now, the information below only applies to that "chain of command" set of pages.

What we have now is a mishmash of user choices, where you may see a planet page with a planet, a star, a region, and a galaxy category listed. The planet isn't a galaxy, it's a planet <g>

OK, let's have some examples. For these, assume that we have the following pages defined:

  • Moonbugs (creature)
  • Luna (moon)
  • Earth (planet)
  • Sol (star)
  • Orion Arm (region)
  • Milky Way (galaxy)

Basically, this is the new standard:

1) a regular page will have (most of the time) a single category, and that category will be it's name. 2) on a category page, there will be a description of the category, plus two subcategories: a) what type of page we're working with, and 2) the name of the owning body

Examples:

  • Earth page - Category:Earth
  • Category:Earth page - Category:Planets and Category:Sol
  • Sol page - Category:Sol
  • Category:Sol page - Category:Star systems and Category:Orion Arm
  • Orion Arm page - Category:Orion Arm
  • Category:Orion arm page - Category:Regions and Category:Milky Way

etc

This way, we have a series of cascading categories that act as a tree structure.

For items like creatures, starships, or multi-tools, they "belong" to the planet where you found them. If it's a starship you discovered at a space station, then it is "owned" by the star that the space station can be found in.

For a real-life example, look at the The Arm of Ehnislio page, and open it's category page. You'll see there is a Subcategories section (top) and a Category section (bottom)

The bottom section will normally contain one item - the page for item in question.

The top section will contain things that "belong" to the main category. Items with a blue arrow can be expanded to show the tree structure. A white arrow indicates you're at the end of the tree.

When creating categories, there are some new entries on the "preload selection" page, one for each of the major types of category groupings. So if you are creating a category for a moon, there is a Moon Category link.

I'll admit, it seems a bit complicated at first, but once I started creating them, they really are easy to do. And it definitely adds structure, so it's worth the effort to learn the ropes.

Give this a study, and let me know what other questions you may have.

Thanks!

Avatar for The zed0

I think I got the structure figured out with my Oneyri Sector category chain. Let me know if I missed something.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Looks good so far - one minor change. When creating a category on a page, instead of creating this:

use this (i.e. with the pipe symbol). This "pulls" the category out of any alpha listing and makes it the first entry listed.

Another thing with the new category method. If you have created a category page for one of the planets, you can just copy-and-paste the code to create all the category pages for the various planets while you're at it. You can have a category for a page that doesn't exist yet, and then it will be there when needed. It can be quicker than waiting and creating them on the fly, since much of the data will be the same.

And a third thought. Normally, I don't move a list into double columns until there are more than 5-6 entries available. It makes the list easier to read for short lists if it's a single column instead of multiples.

Thanks!

Avatar for The zed0

What page are you seeing double columns? I didn't do anything with columns in this batch of changes.

NM. Found it. A copy/paste error on the region page.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Oneyri Sector - looks like you spotted it and changed it to 1. Thanks!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

The link you added to ZED-05 IIa - the page I get is simply a blank page with a red box?

Avatar for The zed0

My bad. Was in a hurry last night. It's fixed now.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Quick question for you.

It looks like, although your ID is "The zed0", you sign your pages with "TheZed".

If you want to change your profile name to actually BE "TheZed", lemme know and I'll send you a link where you can request the change.

Thanks!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Don't know if you pay much attention to the Achievements list on your profile page, but you are fairly close to receiving the "Master of No Man's Sky Wiki" award. I encourage our frequent editors to earn this, as it marks you as one of the more knowledgeable NMS wiki editors.

There are three achievements you still need:

I Like You - add 1 friend to your social profile

Mr. Popular - add 10 friends to your social profile

Favoritism - choose a favorite wiki (found under Preferences)

OK, go for it!

Avatar for The zed0

I've tried to do the favorite wiki setting, but my profile page doesn't save if I have that field filled in.

Avatar for Gorla

Actually the I Like You and Mr. Popular achievements count the sent friend requests. Also you can send, cancel and resend the request even for the same person 10 times. If you want, you can do this with my account.

Avatar for The zed0

Thanks Gorla. That made it easy.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Quick note... if you are updating a system from NEXT to Visions and there is more than one change or two, make a section on the page where you can document the info of what the system used to look like.

That helps keep a record of the different releases. Thanks!

Avatar for The zed0

Do you know of an example I can copy from?

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

I added a sample section to ZED-03 III.

If you find there are a TON of changes, a better solution may be to simply create an archive page for the NEXT version instead of making note of all the changes. If you run into a situtation like that, let me know and I can go over how to do that as well.

Avatar for The zed0

Looks good. I can do that. With the exception of lifeless worlds becoming anomaly worlds the only other big changes I've seen has been in some colors, specifically water color. Most of the other updates is just getting missing info (original name, environment data, maybe a missing critter) and creating my github map (missing for most of my first 6 systems).

Avatar for Gorla

Just a minor remark regarding game versions: that one (I think Visions) should be used for the version template and the infobox, when you discovered the system/planet etc. I guess it is just a copy/paste error on your pages and if you need help fixing let me know.

Avatar for The zed0

Not an error. I am still back entering old discoveries. Most of what I have created so far has not been visited/updated since Next. Hence using Next in the info box and the Next template.

Avatar for Gorla

Okay, I assumed wrong and that is why I wrote it that way. Also you are right that not discovery, but last visit is reflected with the template and infobox.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

Quick comment - if you use a pic in the infobox, then we wouldn't include the same pic in the body of the page (ZED-08 for example)

Thanks!

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

One minor suggestion on your pages. In most of the tables in the discovery column you use a phrase something like this:

By PC explorer TheZed on 8/22/18

As a general rule, if the data in a column is basically the same every time, you could do the following:

1) add a disclaimer before the table (or after if you prefer) that would say:

NOTE: unless otherwise noted, all discoveries are by PC explorer The Zed

2) then you would change the discovery column to only include the date of discovery

It would shorten the amount of data you have to type, and make the date stand out a bit.

Anyway, your call. Thanks!

Avatar for The zed0

I'll give that a try with the next planet, see how it looks. Thanks.

Avatar for Ddfairchildd

This wiki can't be your first rodeo - I don't remember ever having a "new" user have their pages done so correctly right up front.

You make my job as an admin a piece of emeril - thanks!

Avatar for The zed0

Thanks. I used to wiki for Guild Wars 2 quite a bit and I use a private wiki at work, so I know the markup. Plus I studied a lot of pages before starting to get a sense of what users were doing and what parts of it I liked/wanted to use.
