The Anomaly

Joining the Anomaly

The Anomaly is one of the game's races.

Summary[ | ]

The Anomaly, also known as the Fifth Race, are a sentient species in the No Man's Sky universe. The player always starts as one, and can choose for their character to remain a member of this species in the Appearance Modifier. They are a subgroup within Travellers that is player-exclusive.[citation needed] No instance of Anomalies have been seen outside of player choice. Though, many Anomaly's helmets and gloves can be found floating within every Derelict Freighter which are supposed to have only Gek, Korvax, or Vy'keen crew.

Appearance[ | ]

All options for the Anomaly character model reflect a typical human space suit, heavily implying that Anomalies are indeed a human-like race. They permanently wear what looks like a helmet. However, some models of helmet look like a structural part of the body rather than headgear.

According to Autophage, 'the Void' is what's inside the suit.

Lore[ | ]

The Anomalies were created by the ATLAS through brain scans of its creator in an attempt to preserve itself and end its loneliness. However, the data was corrupt. [citation needed]

Additional information[ | ]

  • With the introduction of Third-Person View the appearance of the player character is defaulted to an Anomaly, which can be changed later at an Appearance Modifier.
  • Since the Appearance Modifier states that it merely changes the outside look of the player through holographic projections, rather than changing their species or DNA, all players could still be considered part of the Anomaly race even when they take the appearance of another species.
  • The dialogues of the storyline and the related NPCs, like Nada and Polo, refer to the player as a Traveller. While some of these NPCs may not be aware that the player can camouflage their appearance with advanced technology (like the Appearance Modifier), all space stations do have them and both Nada and Polo know about 'the simulation' and the multiverse. There still remains reasonable evidence the player might be part of the Anomaly race because both Nada and Polo do not know the race of the Atlas' creators and all players start as one. Another option is that the term Traveller might be ascribed to all that freely travel the multiverse which, like Null and many other iterations, vary greatly in their appearance and avatar while being known as the Traveller race. Most of these possibilities have not been confirmed, but cannot yet be ruled out.
