The names of the trophies are taken from the titles of well-known literary works of science fiction. For example:
- Contact is the title of Carl Sagan's 1985 novel, adapted by Robert Zemeckis into a 1997 film starring Jodie Foster
- Who Goes There? is the title of a 1938 novella by John W. Campbell, Jr. that inspired the films The Thing from Another World (1951) and The Thing (1982)
- What Mad Universe is a 1949 novel by Frederic Brown
- Stranger in a Strange Land is a 1961 novel by Robert Heinlein
- The Sentinel is a 1951 short story by Arthur C. Clarke that inspired Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Foundation was Isaac Asimov's 1951 novel that began his long-running Foundation series; etc.
The only exception is Total Perpective Vortex, which is a device described by Douglas Adams in his 1980 novel, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.
