Separate Pages for Outlaw and Dissonant Systems (31 December 2023)[]

We should make a separate page collection for both Outlaw and Abandoned systems (and more recently, Dissonance as a concept) as information on how to get to one and the differences between regular systems are spread between pages like Space Station and Galactic Trade Terminal. Making these two pages in specific be a topic on "regular" systems and new pages like "Contraband Dealer" and "Outlaw Station" which link to specifically "Outlaw System" and mention their parallels to the regular variants would be a better experience in my opinion. I could help with this myself but making such radical changes to many pages at once seems to me that it should require approval of some kind. As I never edit this website, I'm not sure if this is the place to post such a request. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.66.65.246 (talk) at 15:35, 31 December 2023‎ (UTC). Welcome, thanks for the help! We already have dedicated pages for Abandoned Systems and Uncharted Systems, maybe you can take a look at them and make the pages for dissonant/outlaw systems in a similar fashion. It would also be great if you could create an account, so you don't leak your IP and you can track your edits better. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Seeking help! Building your base Trade terminal... bugged? (14 May 2021)[]

HI, I need help reporting a possible bug and help identifying whether or not this IS an actual bug. Tyvm in advance for your action. My question/situation is; Why can't i build my trade terminal? It says i can build 10 of them. At first after buying the unlock, i placed a trade terminal on my freighter, then went on planet to install in my base. At my base, i noted that if i do not have both materials that make the terminal, it shows green and buildable, yet i cannot build it...however, once i have all resource mats to build it in my exosuit, it is red and unbuildable. I have ample power, i have unlocked it but it is bugged. My base is fairly large and i have tried all proximities from teleporter, etc. I don't kno how to do bug reports yet. Plz help me let this be known to the wonderful Hello Games family. I am a bit behind when it comes to this gaming life but i will try too. Thx

Answer 1[]

Hello,

You mentioned your base was rather large.

I would recommend you check that it is under the part limit, as being above can cause some issues.

Apart from that, I will redirect you to HG's Zendesk where you can report bugs and remind you that the wiki is not the place to talk about them.

The NMS Subreddit or Discord is far better suited for this.

Many thanks.

COMPLETE - Official Request For Recognition As A Sovereign Civilization(7 March 21)[]

Hello! In, hopefully, my last troubled post on this page, I would like to officially request Sovereign Recognition for the civilization I represent (KSSS) , as a humble wiki editor and documenter for the civilization. Despite this minor role, I would like to request this status, as we have just successfully documented 5 Star Systems. Thank You! DarkMode16 (talk) 18:13, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

I have moved this request to the talk page for Civilized space. You can check there for future developments. Ddfairchildd (talk) 21:44, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

COMPLETE - Question Regarding Current Page Order (7/3/21)[]

Hello Again! Really sorry for hogging up the front page, but I couldn't find another way to contact an admin. I just wanted to ask whether adding 1 more star system to our page (KSSS) with the same amount of info as the other systems would make us eligible for recognition? Thanks a lot! Oh and The region on 2 systems isn't showing up on the main page, can someone please help me find out where I went wrong? Thanks a lot! DarkMode16 (talk) 19:31, 6 March 2021 (UTC)

COMPLETE - Help regarding Civilization recognition(5/3/21)[]

Hey! I just wanted some help regarding getting my civilization officially recognized. The Krillfederation has about 6 systems, from which 4 are left to be documented. Can someone please help guide me as to how many systems, as well as how much information per system in the bare requirement for being recognized? Thanks! DarkMode16 (talk) 04:46, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

If you go to the Civilized space page, the requirements are listed there. I answered your question more fully on your profile page. Ddfairchildd (talk) 05:29, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

COMPLETE - Anomaly Discussion/Investigations 4/23/20[]

I have what I think is new information (I do not know where I would look to discuss or contribute), regarding two/three anomalies. Is there a place here I should add this information? Or is there another one I am not aware of? It consists of two pictures and theories for one, and two theories for two others. Fluffinator0982446 (talk) 18:00, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

If you are referring to a Space Encounter, then you can reference this page: Space Encounter. If you are wanting the Space Anomaly, then use this page: Space Anomaly You can also use the search bar to look for phrases that might direct you to the proper page. Does this help? Ddfairchild (talk) 18:10, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
I was referring to the Space Encounters in this case. I have posted a very in depth Reddit thread in r/NoMansSkyTheGame but it has yet to garner any posts beyond my own. Therefore I am afraid I have already been lost in the clutter, so I am trying to figure out a proper 'signal boost' action to gain more discussion and contribution to this.

I have place a copy of your post on the talk page for Space Encounters. Can't promise any response, but at least it's there. Thanks! Ddfairchild (talk) 22:05, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
Thank you! Hopefully this will bring more people in. Also, is there a clear guide on creating an Official 'Hub' in general? Fluffinator0982446 (talk) 17:11, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
Fill me in on what you mean by an official HUB? Ddfairchild (talk) 05:14, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

COMPLETE - Application For Official Inclusion In Civilized Space 4/13/20[]

Owner of The Union Of Communal Stars formally requests inclusion and recognition as an established and recognized Civilization. Due to inaccessibility to No Man's Sky, we are unable to properly add pages for our remaining star systems, however, any member of the wiki is gladly allowed to visit the systems themselves to confirm our claim over them. The region has been experiencing an issue with renaming, and several planets and systems are constantly shifting names from the original names to the renamed ones. It is therefore requested to check the validity of the claims via discoverer name, TheDarkness473-, and not system names. The pages of the remaining systems shall be added as soon as we are sure of the rename issue being fixed, and once all data and images are in good order. Thank you. Eclipsed void16 (talk) 08:51, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. I have copied it to the Civspace talk page, which is where future comments on your request will be added. Thanks! Ddfairchild (talk) 14:26, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

COMPLETE - Adding a company 14 Sep 2019[]

I have a large collection of detailed, resource bases I'm wanting to put here as a company. I believe I have all the listed requirements but I have no idea how to begin. I suppose my first question is whether I need permission to add it. After that it would be helpful if there were a guide of some sort to begin adding and editing. Any help would be great. Vanyelmage (talk) 04:08, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

I've added some information to your user profile page - hope it helps. Thanks! Ddfairchild (talk) 15:23, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

OPEN - Missing Planet Type Information 2 Aug 2020[]

I would like to share my experience as user who started playing NMS recently.

When I am flying my starship inside a new star system I just warped to, and see an unmapped planet, I can hit C to get some basic information about it.

DemoPlanetType1

This shows "Finned Planet", so I open this wiki's main page and put "finned" in the top-right search field to see if there is an article about it.

DemoPlanetType2

As the auto-complete does not offer any article containing the word "finned". In fact - it does not offer any suggestions at all - so I hit ENTER to see the full list of results.

DemoPlanetType3

None of results have "finned" in their title. In fact, all of the results describe other logged planets of type "finned", but just by looking at the list of the search results - it is clear to me that there is no general page on this wiki describing what a "finned planet" is. As a new player I assume this wiki is probably likewise new and does not contain the information I need, so I go and search on other resources - Reddit, Fandom etc.

But of course, since I have used the wiki for a little bit longer now, I have already stumbled upon Biome - Exotic, which is the target page that should have been displayed to me when I was searching for "finned" initially! I would imagine players who played the game for a year or more would probably know all the hundred or so name variations by heart - however please try to put yourselves in the shoes of someone who just started playing NMS for whom it may be the first or one of their first visits to this wiki.
There are three main questions here.
  1. Does the community want this wiki to be the "go to" resource for any player, be it new or experienced, or is the community quite relaxed about players being disappointed with the lack of information this wiki provides? I would assume the community would prefer that this wiki is the "go to" resource.
  2. Does the community care about helping newbie players to give them the information they are likely going to be looking for, or is this community mostly targeting veteran players? I assume that new players are in scope.
  3. What is a good solution to the current problem of not being able to find this information easily? A simple and effective solution I would propose is to create about a hundred or so redirect pages - one page per possible planet type, each redirecting to the page with the general information about that biome. Demonstration of this solution on an example: Tropical > Biome - Lush.
I open this wiki's main page and put "tropical" in the top-right search field to see if there is an article about it.
DemoPlanetType4
I immediately see "tropical" as one of the auto-completion choices, so I click on it. I am taken to the redirected page Biome - Lush where I can read the information that I was looking for on this wiki.
DemoPlanetType5

Please tag anyone who you feel will be interested to discuss this. @User:Ddfairchild @User:Thamalandis.

Trajos (talk) 12:15, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

When I search for the word "finned", two of the first three results that come up display the word "finned" and "exotic" in the same sentence. Wiki searches are not designed to always return an exact page for whatever you happen to search for, any more than Google or Bing will always return the exact page you are looking for.
I also did a quick search for all 10 of the biome flavors for Lush, and other than those you had already created redirects for, not one of them failed to have a top-5 result that was either a direct reference to Biome - Lush or that listed at least one planet that contained the search word and the Lush biome phrase. And most had more than one top-5 reference.
If we do this for biomes, why not for weather? Why not for every word that can be used to describe an artifact? Why not words for anything having to do with multi-tools or starships? The solution you suggest, if carried to full execution, would create not a hundred, but thousands of redirect pages, all based on a single word that a user MIGHT choose to look for. There are also words that are used to describe not only biomes, but other things as well. For example "bountiful" is a type of Lush biome, but it can also describe the level of flora and fauna on a planet. "Flourishing" is both a variety of the Lush biome and a type of Wealth. You've now short-circuited a user searching for the non-biome flavor of the word.
I discussed this with the Gamepedia team the first time you brought up the idea. They described it as a "neutral suggestion at best" the first time, and I doubt they have changed their mind even though you bring it up again. In short, this is an unappetizing solution to a problem that is not, in all likelihood, an actual problem for most users in the first place. Creating hundreds of extra pages is neither simple, nor, in my opinion. necessary. Ddfairchild (talk) 17:44, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
To address your points:
  1. Wiki searches are not designed to always return an exact page for whatever you happen to search for, any more than Google or Bing will always return the exact page you are looking for. - agreed, but this part of the issue in my view. In other words, this is exactly why I am bringing up this topic; if wiki searches were designed that way - there would be no need to discuss this.
  2. I also did a quick search for all 10 of the biome flavors for Lush, and other than those you had already created redirects for, not one of them failed to have a top-5 result that was either a direct reference to Biome - Lush - top-5 result is still not as reliable to make sure a reader notices it, as the page being shown in the search drop-down but as a compromise we could start with anything that doesn't appear in top-5, and leave top-5 as a lower priority job for later.
  3. Why not words for anything having to do with multi-tools or starships? - I can see Gorla already did something like this for upgrades, e.g. Blaze Javelin Module, Boltcaster Module, so looks like yes, other people were interested in that idea than myself. And yes, I think doing it for weather maybe a useful step - but we have to consider priorities here. Biomes is something that would be the highest priority of the items you mentioned. Why? Because much fewer new players are likely to be interested in an artifacts simply because they are far less likely to encounter them early on - like they would biomes, and then artifacts is something of a much smaller importance to most players, as it's something that you get in your inventory, sell and forget about it, while biome is the actual gameplay environment where you will be playing the game for a few hours or days or weeks - it's a lot more global than an item in your inventory. And in principle I have nothing against doing it for all of those items you mentioned, but biomes are a higher priority for me personally and also I estimate in terms of missed search queries and hence in terms of the number of disappointments they would solve the biggest number of missed searches compared to all the other areas you mentioned - hence they should be fixed first.
  4. Creating hundreds of extra pages is neither simple - what exactly is not simple? If this proposal is agreed - then I will do it free of charge to Gamepedia, so it will be simple for them in that dimension, is there any other complexity?
  5. nor, in my opinion. - if that opinion is based on any reasons not mentioned yet - feel free to put them forward so I can address them.
  6. Gamepedia team ... described it as a "neutral suggestion at best" the first time, and I doubt they have changed their mind even though you bring it up again. - why not tag them in this post to see what they think about reading a well-defined presentation of the idea with pictures from someone who is enthusiastic about it, that can make a big difference. If it's an idea that will likely bring more satisfied readers and with that advertisement revenue - what's not to be happy about.
Trajos (talk) 19:57, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
I praise the decision to generally bring up a topic for discussion before setting out to make numerous changes on the wiki. I think that can avoid wasted time and potentially lead to improvements on ideas for sweeping changes, before they are made. On this specific topic, I am always cautious about adding redirects and instruct others to only do so when necessary or of great benefit. In this case, unless I'm missing something, I don't see the need for redirects. In your example, I encounter a "Finned Planet" in-game and check the wiki for information. If I type "finned" into the search, I simply have to read a couple lines, seeing "This is an exotic finned planet. For more information see Biome - Exotic." I click twice, and arrive at the Biome - Exotic page. That's where you wanted to end up, right? If I instead type in "Finned planet", the very first entry includes "This is a finned planet of". Again, I click twice, and arrive at Biome - Exotic. Yes, I think we are happy to be a "go to" resource and happy to help newbie players, and can reasonably expect them to be able to read a couple lines and click twice. I don't believe redirects are necessary or of great benefit in these cases. But again, I praise you for raising the suggestion, and please do keep an eye out for other ways to improve things. Phaedrus2929 (talk) 20:55, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
I understand your approach about avoiding redirects, but what is the benefit in avoiding them? Trajos (talk) 21:03, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
Avoiding gunking up the site with extra unnecessary pages that can potentially cause problems Phaedrus2929 (talk) 21:22, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
However, I gave the detailed reasons above why these particular redirects are necessary, so that justifies why they can no longer be put in the "unnecessary" category, right? Regarding problems - any details about what sort of potential problems do you have in mind? Trajos (talk) 21:33, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
In the example, you wanted to end up at the Biome - Exotic page, unless I'm misunderstanding. The search will take a user there if they read a couple lines and click twice, so the redirect is not necessary. While we don't want to require that someone is a veteran player to use the wiki, I think it is reasonable to assume they can read a couple lines and click twice. I think if someone can play and enjoy the challenging game of NMS that we all love, then they can read two lines and click twice...so no, a redirect is not needed or necessary in this case. But do keep an eye out for other recommendations and let the community know!Phaedrus2929 (talk) 21:42, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Lush Name generation Change?[]

I’ve noticed in Origins that Tropical Planets are now that of the Marsh Biome instead of the Lush biome, and Grassy Planet has now become a new Name Generation of the Lush biome(possibly as a replacement?). These are just observations I’ve made and I’m not a data miner. I was wondering if one of the data miners for this wiki could look into this to see if this is in fact correct, and if we could update the biome pages to if so. Thank you. -Mattastic119 Mattastic119 (talk) 04:59, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

Incorrect template table, can't fix, someone wanna try?[]

Exosuit table for upgrades is likely outdated, don't have the energy to update it. basing this assumption on checking game assets vs ingame, regarding defense system upgrades:

game assets: health is a static 20 across all ranks. UP_SHLD1 (C-class): 1-2 stats, weighting: 'MaxIsRare'. shield increase has range 90-95%, weighting 'MinIsUncommon'. UP_SHLD2 (B-class): 1-2 stats, weighting: 'MaxIsUncommon'. shields can be from 85-90%, weighting: 'MinIsUncommon'. UP_SHLD3 (A-class): always 2 stats. shield is 80-90% with weighting 'MinIsSuperRare'. UP_SHLD4 (S-class): always 2 stats. shield 80-90%, weighting 'MinIsUncommon'. UP_SHLDX, (x-class) 1-2 stats, weighted MaxIsRare 75-95%, weighting: 'MinIsUncommon'

ingame: I have an A class mod that has 89% shield, and not one of my 2 S class mods is over 90. they're 89 and 87.

table on the template page (https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Template:ExosuitTechUpgrades): c:80-90 b:80-90 a:85-90 s:90-95 x:75-95

this, combined with some ingame results, leads to the conclusion that the listings for C, A and S class shield modules are incorrect. Blame HG for mixing up the values, I guess? -Kherae (check NMS discord I guess?) -5:24pm UTC-8, June 6th, 2021.

Official Request to be recognized as a Company[]

4/21/2023 Hello,

I am pleased to be able to formally submit Weyland-Yutani Corporation for Company Status. We at The Company control 8 Star Systems, 5 of which have been uploaded to the Wiki, and more will be added shortly. Weyland-Yutani Corporation was founded because myself and my deceased brother were ultra fans of the Aliens/Predator Universes. I am attempting to build a monument of sorts to my brother. Today (04/21/2023) is the one year anniversary of my brother's passing, as such I thought it appropriate to apply for our Charter today. I aspire to have a system in every Galaxy claimed for The Company, with a memorial system and statue in every Galaxy dedicated to Ender.

If we do not qualify for Company status for any reason please inform me so that I may rectify our shortcoming.

Thank you for your consideration, | | A Man Literally on Fire | CEO | Weyland-Yutani Corporation | Building Better Worlds

I have new content to add but don't have details[]

Hello, I am new to the game and I use a lot of the wiki. I found something that is not in the wiki, a "Harmonic Scrap" encounter that makes me fix some broken machinery, which I don't know if is story or quest related. I thought of recording here the lines of dialogue and the material requirements, but I can't make a full page out of this. I don't even know what category this is, no idea which update, how to locate them or any other detail except what I encountered. Does it make sense to even add this little content? Does somebody help with filling this details up? Maybe it is has not been put in the wiki for a reason that I am not aware of. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Possibly Separate the Wiki (February 18, 2024)[]

I personally think it may be a good idea to split the wiki into an official content wiki, where there is information about in-game features and 2 others, on for player creations like factions and bases, and one about cataloguing everything. this would help make the wiki more focused on actual content.

I think this is something that should've been decided in the early days of the wiki. Now, over 10 years later (yes, the wiki has existed for over 10 years at this point), it would be a huge effort to split all the different content. We have nearly 80k pages just in the main namespace. These pages are deeply interconnected with links, templates, database queries, etc. Tl;dr: Too much work required at this point, it won't happen. Thank you for the suggestion though. Lenni (talk) 18:39, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
