Quadrants are a mapping device.

Summary[ | ]

Quadrants are four major divisions of any given galaxy, with lines spreading in each direction (up, down, left, right) from the centre of the galaxy. The Galaxy Centre itself and coordinates very close to it, are not considered to be a Quadrant.

Usage[ | ]

There is no galactic compass or navigational aids in No Man's Sky so iVc Interlopers as well as Travellers rely on the big bright ball in the centre of the galaxy as a fixed navigational beacon and divide galaxies in half with a vertical centreline that we refer to as Prime gMeridian and a horizontal centreline Prime gHorizon. All vertical space within each quadrant is referred to as gAltitude

Definition[ | ]

The resulting quadrants are:

  1. Alpha Quadrant - Top left of Galaxy Map
  2. Beta Quadrant - Top right of Galaxy Map
  3. Gamma Quadrant - Bottom left of Galaxy Map
  4. Delta Quadrant - Bottom right of Galaxy Map

Origin[ | ]

The concept was originally applied to NMS by the IVC Project. IVC needed a logical method to quickly identify reference points when mapping Galactic Coordinates. They decided on a quadrant system that is often used in Sci-Fi and would likely be used if galactic navigation became reality.

The system is now widely used by many civilizations, and the IVC Project no longer refers to the Quadrants as IVC Quadrants, but simply Quadrants.
