Federation Emblem 2

Emblem for the United Federation of Travelers.

Summary

The United Federation of Travelers, more often just called the Federation, is an alliance of Civilized space zones (communities of players) in Euclid, Hilbert, Calypso, Budullangr, Eissentam, and other galaxies. It was formed on April 15, 2017, and went public on April 25, 2017.

The Federation's purpose is to unite civilizations behind universally beneficial goals without hindering any sovereign civilization's customs or practices, and to assist in the founding of new civilizations in the five most populous galaxies (Euclid, Hilbert, Calypso, Budullangr, and Eissentam).

While fan-fiction/roleplay elements can be involved, the Federation places no official restrictions on, and makes no specific endorsements of, any fan-fiction. Federation Civilizations are left to manage their own fan-fiction/roleplaying/lore.

The Federation's main website is the Federation Subreddit.

Universally Beneficial Goals

To Document, Aid, Create, and Communicate. These are the Federation's primary goals. All Federation civilizations are expected to follow them and encourage their citizens to follow them.

Centralization of Information

To document all No Man's Sky-related information on a single Wiki (this Wiki). Additionally seeks to have a centralized database linking to various Reddit-based NMS info (Coordinate thread from r/NoMansHigh, bug thread from r/NoMansSkyTheGame, Fauna Guide from r/NMS_Zoology, etc). This (still incomplete) centralized information source can be found here: Interloper's Guide to the Galaxy - Complete Guide to NMS.

Civilization Establishment

To aid groups with the establishments of new civilizations in the five most populous galaxies (Euclid, Hilbert, Calypso, Budullangr, and Eissentam), and to aid any existing civilizations.

Communication with Civilization Leaders

To create an environment where those with experience establishing and managing NMS civilizations can give tips to those wishing to establish new civilizations (such as placing new civilizations in the "Goldilocks zone," the easiest location for most players to travel to).

Visibility & Inter-Civilization Communication

To communicate with known Civilized Space zones. To provide a place for new communities to announce their plans and news without being buried by other NMS threads. To clearly list contact info for Ambassadors/Representatives of civilizations, and provide a place for civilization Ambassadors/Representatives to communicate with each other.

Joining the Federation

The conditions for participation are currently being revised. If you are interested, please contact the Federation moderators directly:

https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=/r/NMS_Federation

As the Federation is not a civilization, but rather an alliance of multiple civilizations, individual travelers cannot apply to join the Federation. Individual travelers may, however, apply on behalf of the civilization which they represent.

Criteria

Any civilizations seeking Federation membership status must meet at least one of the following two criteria:

  • 30 or more systems documented on the NMS Gamepedia wiki (this wiki). If just a list of 30 system names, at least 5 need actual, separate solar system or planet pages documenting in-game content.
  • 2 or more human members.

Process

If your civilization meets those criteria, you can then follow the steps below to apply for Federation membership:

  • Your civilization must agree to encourage the use of the NMS Gamepedia Wiki over other documentation tools, and ideally (but optionally) contribute to the Wiki in other ways as well. This is part of the Centralization of Information pillar.
  • Your civilization must provide coordinates for a capital system, unless you are a non-localized community. Capitals may be changed at any time, and are primarily used for mapping and navigation purposes.
  • Contact any Federation Ambassador to apply for membership. It is recommended that you use the "Message the Moderators" feature of the subreddit, as we will be able to most quickly update your information. However, any Federation Ambassador may accept your application.

After your civilization is accepted,

  • Your civilization's name (and emblem, if applicable) will show on the 3rd tab of Pilgrim Star Path, an app used by ~50% of the NMS community (Source: No Man's Sky Unofficial Player Survey).
  • Your civilization will be added to the subreddit's sidebar.
  • Your civilization's emblem will be added to the sidebar, if you have one.
  • Your civilization will be added to the United Federation of Travelers wiki page.

"Citizen of (Your Civilization)" user flairs will be added. Citizens may assign their own flairs by clicking "Edit" next to your username on the sidebar, below the Subscribe/Unsubscribe button (may not appear on mobile). Note that it may take a while before newly-joined civilizations are added to Federation Maps, as those currently have to be manually updated, making them more difficult to update.

About this image

Federation Civilizations

Coordinates are for their capital systems, which may or may not include a capital planet. If the coordinates say "PART4", just leave that part off while using Pilgrim Star Path (or other plotting apps). The fourth set of coordinates isn't directly used in mapping, so it's not needed (but leaving it off entirely messes up the formatting).

The "Classification" section refers to Civilization Categories, which are further divided into two sub-categories: size (Hub/Standard/Rural/Solo/Abandoned) and type (Documentation, Militant, etc). Size categories are further specified as Estimated (E), meaning the tag is essentially a guess based on varying amounts of evidence, or Registered (R), meaning the tag is based on an actual civilization census.

Note that in larger civilizations, censuses will generally be an underestimate, as not 100% of the players in the region will sign the census.

Decision History

NOTE: This section strictly covers the Decision Threads, the "Final Word" by the Federation (unless another poll is posted, but that rarely happens). For the entirety of the discussion surrounding a topic, it's recommended you search for related phrases in the r/NMS_Federation sidebar.

April 22, 2017 - The Four Goals of the Federation

Decision thread. This established the Federation's Four Goals, "To document, aid, create, and communicate."

April 23, 2017 - Official Federation Wiki

Decision thread. This established the use of the Gamepedia Wiki over other Wikis as a mandatory requirement for Federation membership.

April 24, 2017 - Federation Qualification Requirements

Decision thread. This established other qualifications that civilizations must meet in order to join the Federation, such as having 2 human members or 30 wiki-documented solar systems.

April 30, 2017 - On Civilization Censuses

Decision thread. This established that censuses for civilizations would be "Encouraged," meaning they would be emphasized but not mandatory, rather than "Required" (mandatory to have a census for membership) or "Optional" (no emphasis on censuses).

May 3, 2017 - On Galactic Standard Time

Decision thread. This established that civilizations would not need to adhere to a specific fictional timeline.

September 1, 2017 - Port Systems and Federal Port Registry

Decision thread. This established that civilizations will be "strongly encouraged" to select a "Port" system, a dedicated system for permanent Portal travel / base claiming without concern of overwriting another player's base.

October 11, 2017 - On Removing Inactive Civilizations

Decision thread. This established that civilizations with no signs of activity for 2 months will be removed from the Federation, with the ability to rejoin at any time.

October 19, 2017 - The United Federation of Travelers Metahub

Decision thread. This established that the Federation would not encourage population of a specific zone surrounding the Galactic Hub.

October 28, 2017 - On Replacing Information Central with the Interloper's Guide to the Galaxy

Decision thread. This established that the Interloper's Guide to the Galaxy - Complete Guide to NMS would replace Information Central as the Federation's main source of information.

November 5, 2017 - On Unification Day month and Simple Majority Voting

Decision thread. This established that polls relating to Unification Day (2017) would be allowed to pass with a simple 51% majority instead of the usual 60% required by the Federation. It also established that Unification Day would be hosted sometime in December.

November 9, 2017 - On Unification Day Location

Decision thread. This established that Unification Day would be held at a location easily accessible via Portals.

November 9, 2017 - On Allowing Non-Fed Civilizations to Vote in Unification Day Topics

Decision thread. This established that civilizations which are not currently allied with the Federation would still be allowed to vote on those polls relating to Unification Day, with the interests of being as inclusive (and unified) as possible.

November 9, 2017 - Unification Day Leadership

Decision thread. This established that Unification Day's major decisions would be voted on by the community, while the minor decisions were finalized by a Council of elected users.

November 20, 2017 - Galactic Consortium Established

Decision thread This established the Galactic Consortium as a Department for The Federation whose directive is to catalog farms, create trade routes and encourage new civilizations to join The Federation.

Other History

AGT and Solarion Imperium Leave the Alliance

Following a disagreement surrounding the matter of what qualifies as a Census and the results of the Galactic Standard Time vote, the Alliance of Galactic Travellers and Solarion Imperium departed from the Federation Alliance.

Solarion Imperium Separates the Galactic Consortium from the Federation

In a controversial decision, Solarion Imperium Representative (former Ambassador) Tempest416 announced the separation of the Galactic Consortium, a database of farms and other financially-oriented information, from the Federation. Other Ambassadors, such as Galactic Hub Ambassador 7101334, Galactic Pathfinders Ambassador DonRaccoon and Arcadian Republic Ambassador Axiom1380, spoke up against this decision. Opposition included questions of whether Tempest416 had the authority to enact this action without a vote, as the Galactic Consortium was originally established as a Federation department.

Unification Day Conspiracy, Calls for Removal, & the Fall of Vestroga

Conspiracy & Calls for Removal

Following the exposure of communications centered around the disruption of Unification Day 2017 between former Amino Hub Ambassadors BoidGaming and NMS_Survival_Guru, and former Vestroga Hub Foundation Ambassador Galactic_Glory, polls were co-sponsored by Galactic Hub Ambassador 7101334 and Galactic Empire of HOVA Ambassador GtaHov calling for the removal of the Vestroga Hub and Amino Hub from the Federation alliance.

The Amino Hub initially responded with this official statement and an official vote within their civ regarding Vestroga. The resignations of NMS_Survival_Guru and BoidGaming from their Ambassador positions followed. As seen in the comments, removal poll co-sponsors 7101334 and GtaHov regarded this response as being inadequate to remedy the situation.

These polls ultimately culminated in the Vestroga Hub's removal from the alliance, while the Amino Hub's removal poll was conditionally rescinded. The Amino Hub's removal poll would be reopened nearly a month later, but in the short-term, the conditional rescinding of the poll appeared to ease tensions.

The Fall of Vestroga

On November 27, 2017, the day after the removal polls were posted, the Solarion Imperium officially declared war on the Vestroga Hub. Following threats made by former Vestroga Hub Ambassadors against the Galactic Empire of Hova, the Empire would later join the war as an ally of the Solarion Imperium, forming the Solaris Pact military alliance.

The war was a mixture of fan-fiction (or "propaganda") and gameplay elements. Gameplay elements included mass renaming of systems and blockades of player-built farms within the Vestroga Nebula. Vestroga Hub Foundation members, including Galactic_Glory and WAAM86, quickly began distancing themselves from the embattled civilization. These warfare tactics proved devastating enough that the Vestroga Hub Foundation officially collapsed, becoming the first civilization to be destroyed by another.

A Kotaku article about the Fall of Vestroga can be found here. A slightly dramatized account of the war can be read on the Vestroga Hub War page.

Amino Hub and Solarion Imperium Leave the Alliance

Following ongoing hostilities between Galactic Hub Ambassador 7101334 and Amino Hub Ambassadors sodaconrocks & NMS_Survival_Guru, 7101334 reopened the Amino Hub removal poll. However, after input from New Hub Order Ambassador intothedoor and Empire of Jatriwil Representative WAAM86 (then an unaffiliated refugee of the Vestroga Hub Foundation), this measure was rescinded in favor of a less drastic response, a poll calling for the removal and censor of Amino Hub Ambassador sodaconrocks.

In response, and before the aforementioned vote concluded, the Amino Hub announced their decision to leave the Federation alliance. Ambassador responses were mixed, and can be seen in the comments. 7101334's "Removal & Censor" vote was then altered to reflect sodaconrocks's "Representative" status rather than his "Ambassador" status, with both the "Remove" and "Censor" options passing with 80% approval from 5 voting civilizations.

Following the aftermath of the vote, which included the final severance of the longstanding-but-recently-troubled relationship between the Galactic Hub and Amino Hub, Oh_Captain-Lion remained as the Amino Hub's sole official Representative within the Federation. A relevant quote from Oh_Captain-Lion may be found here:

I regret not doing enough to stop the Amino Hub from distancing itself from the Federation. I'm sorry to have failed this council and my fellow citizens of the Amino Hub. I do hope this is an issue that will de-escalate with our departure, and that one day open, friendly relations can occur between our two groups again.
Until that day comes, I am ready to assist the other members of the Federation Council to the best of my ability as a liaison to the Amino Hub, and will continue to assist Hova and his Empire in charting the Delta Quadrant of Euclid.
With heavy heart and weary mind, I must sign off. Hopefully, at the end of this dark chapter, a new and brighter one may emerge
-Signed
Captain A. Admin, Liason of the Amino Hub

In similar fashion to their actions during the initial AGT departure from the Federation, the Solarion Imperium announced they would also be leaving the Federation. The Arcsinx Nexus also announced their departure from the Federation, and although it wasn't explicitly stated as being connected to Amino Hub/Solarion Imperium's departure, the timing coincides and it seems to be implied.

The Rise & Fall of the Intergalactic Coalition of Civilizations

Founding & Rise of ICC

The Intergalactic Coalition of Civilizations (ICC), the second known alliance of multiple third-party civilizations (as the Galactic Hub & AGT "alliances" are solely first-party, that is, they establish new civilizations but don't recruit existing ones), was founded by the Galactic Empire of HOVA, Solarion Imperium, Amino Hub, Arcsinx Nexus, Galactic Agriculture Society, and others.

In its initial announcement, ICC-founder DanteKyon explained that it was created in response to perceived mistreatment:

The idea is, long story short, that some of us in the past feel as though we have not been treated the way we would like online. Some of us have reported that this mistreatment runs to the top of the most powerful (current) organization in the universe. That being the Federation. Other complaints of the fed were it slowly becoming over time a huge federalist government run by false elections and dwindling individuality. Assessing this, I co-founded a new superalliance with those dudes reminiscent to the federation and AGT.

The response in the comments from Federation Ambassadors was generally apprehensive, if not blatantly negative. A follow-up statement by DanteKyon drew further accusations of vitriolic behavior. Galactic Hub Ambassador 7101334 referred to the alliance as "Diet Fed" on multiple occasions, to the ire of the ICC members, further fueling tensions.

Other founders, such as Solarion Imperium's ICC Representative Tempest416 and Amino Hub's ICC Representative sodaconrocks, attempted to introduce the new alliance in a more positive light. By that point, most Ambassadors had apparently soured to the concept of the ICC, as a majority of comments in the relatively-positive post nonetheless referenced the apparently-spiteful nature of the ICC indicated by Dante's initial announcements.

Following the friction of this initial announcement, a vote to censor ICC-related posts and ban DanteKyon from r/NMS_Federation was proposed by Galactic Hub Ambassador 7101334, receiving a response of 85% "Do Not Censor (ICC-related Posts)" and 85% "Ban (DanteKyon)".

With the most vitriolic ICC Founder banned from the Federation, and with a clear indication that most Ambassadors were okay with ICC-related posts from the remaining ICC Representatives, Federation-ICC interaction cooled off as the two alliances operated separately and essentially without interaction for a time.

The ICC Collapses

On March 23, 2018, due to apparent internal pressures, a variety of civilizations announced their disinterest in continued participation in the Intergalactic Coalition of Civilizations. The Galactic Empire of HOVA was the first to announce its withdrawal, followed by the Solarion Imperium announcing their discontinuation of the alliance an hour later, and approximately 2 hours after that, the Amino Hub clarified that it "no longer has an interest in becoming an active participant (in the ICC)".

Only 5 ½ hours after the Empire of Hova announced their withdrawal, Galactic Hub Ambassador 7101334 officially declared the collapse of the ICC, an assessment validated by Federation Ambassador & ICC Founder GtaHov. All qualifying ICC civilizations were invited to join the Federation alliance. Many of the remaining ICC civilizations gradually announced their withdrawal over time, as seen here, a day after the collapse; and here, two days after the collapse.

Former ICC Civilizations Join the Federation

On March 29, 2018, four former ICC civilizations - the Arcsinx Nexus, Galactic Vanguard, Galactic Agriculture Society, and Solarion Imperium - joined or re-joined the Federation alliance. The related announcement can be viewed here.
